Step 1. Clear a Path 

While the installation crew can do most of the work outside of your home, there will be certain cases where they need access inside as well. So make sure you clear a path to the windows and doors in your home. This will make the process go more quickly. You also want to remove objects and furniture that are close to the windows. If you don’t have a lot of storage in your home you may want to rent a portable container to store your items in while the crew works on your home.   

Step 2. Remove Obstructions from the Outside 

The installation crew will spend the majority of their time outside your home. This means you want to make sure the outside is also clear. They will put down tarps where needed. But there will also need to set up ladders and scaffolding. If you have patio furniture, planter boxes, or other outdoor décor around your windows you will want to remove those items. Also, if you have prized flower beds know the team will do their best not to trod on your plants, but if you are particularly attached you might want to transplant some of your finer greenery until the installation is complete.   

3. TakeDownWindow Treatments 

Be sure you take the time to remove curtains, blinds, and shutters before the crew shows up. They can help you remove your window coverings, but it will slow the process down. You will also want to remove any wall decorations proximity to your windows. The removal and installation of new windows can jostle the walls and contractors might accidentally knock something down.   

4. Cover Your Furniture

The construction crew will bring several tarps to cover their work areas, but replacing windows is dirty work. To make sure your furniture stays neat you might consider covering couches and chairs yourself. But before taking this step check with the window company to see where they plan to use their own covers.   

5. Disarm Your Alarm System

This is something many homeowners forget about until the day of installation. Prepare in advance and contact your security company, asking them to deactivate the alarms on your home during window installation. And if you have window and door sensors they might have to uninstalled and then replaced after the renovation.
