Tips for Keeping Your Replacement Windows Clean

Did you just get replacement windows in Newberg, OR? If so you probably want to keep them looking new as long as possible. In the summertime, this can prove to be more difficult with all the extra dirt, pollen, sap, and summers storms. Luckily we have some professional tips you can use to keep windows clean and help prolong their life.

1. Wash at the Right Time

Most homeowners end up washing their windows on bright, sunny days because it helps with visibility. What they may not realize is the heat from the sun can actually dry out windows before they can fully wipe them down. At the very least this could leave behind grimy streaks, and at the very worst could scratch the coatings on the glass or frames. It could allow excess heat to enter the home, driving up the cooling costs if you don’t shut off the air conditioning. A better time to clean windows is on a cloudy day, or in the morning or evening. Temperatures are more comfortable and there is still enough light.

2. Use the Correct Products

Regular cleaning keeps windows looking new and helps prolong their life. Yes, older windows may require the use of stronger cleaners and a little more elbow grease to keep them looking good. But brand new windows do not require as much. Homeowners can simply wash the window frames with a soft cloth, water, and mild detergent. Tough dirt might require a soft brush and a more concentrated detergent, but not usually more than that. And a generic glass cleaner or a mixture of vinegar and water is all that is required to clean and shine the glass.

3. Choose a Good Drying Material

Seems like everyone has their own special method for getting a streak free shine on the window glass. Some swear by using paper towels where others insist using newspaper is best. We usually recommend a lint-free microfiber cloth. They are soft, absorbent, and reusable. And for a crystal-bright shine homeowners can polish clean, dry glass with a blackboard eraser.

4. Lubricate with a Silicone Spray

Part of the cleaning and maintenance routine for windows should include cleaning and lubricating the tracks and moving parts. Use a vacuum and plastic putty knife to remove loose dirt and debris. Then spray a silicone lubricant directly into a cloth to avoid overspray and wipe down the track and the parts. It is a simple step but can go a long way in ensuring the smooth operation of windows for years to come.

5. Never Use Harsh Chemicals, Abrasives, or Power Washers

Now a word of caution. There is no reason to ever use harsh chemicals, abrasives, or power washers on replacement windows. These are some of the leading causes of premature window failure because they can strip finishes, scratch coatings, and break the seals on your new windows.
