Should I Get Replacement Windows and Doors in Spring, Summer, Fall, or Winter?

Many homeowners want to know when is the best season for replacement windows and doors in Lake Oswego, OR. But the truth is the installation of doors and windows isn’t exactly seasonal. Professional installers can get these projects done any time of year. That said, there are advantages and disadvantages to each season, and many other factors to consider.

Spring

The leading reason why spring is a great time to replace windows and doors is the milder weather. It is also why a lot of homeowners undertake other home improvement projects in the spring. Temperatures are not too hot or cold so it isn’t as uncomfortable when unconditioned air gets inside. Spring is also the start of longer days. More sunlight means installers have more time to work in a single day and can spend fewer days on a single project. But one downside to choosing spring for replacement windows and doors is that most other people are doing the same. Spring is a busy season which can cause longer lead times and more difficult scheduling.

Summer

Summer in Oregon is also a good time for replacement windows and doors. You don’t have to worry about cold drafts. And luckily you don’t have to worry about temperatures getting too hot. If the weather does get too hot the installers can take steps to prevent too much heat from entering your home. That said, summer is still part of the busy season. So you do have to deal with longer wait times and tight schedules.

Fall

Installing windows and doors when the weather turns chill may not be your first choice. But there are many advantages to getting replacements in the fall. The installers schedules tend to open up in fall as companies get less busy. The cooler, mild temperatures are ideal for installation. And getting new windows in now means you don’t have to worry about the upcoming winter.

Winter

This is usually the time homeowners realize they need new windows. Rooms feel drafty from leaky windows and doors. Condensation forms between the panes. Windows are more brittle in freezing temperatures and break easily. Instead of putting up with leaky windows all winter homeowners relent. Professional installers might set up a little differently in winter, but they can still get the job done. They work from window to window, pulling out the old and replacing it with the new as quickly as possible. This limits the amount of time your home is exposed to the freezing outdoor air. But there are some drawbacks of installing windows and doors in winter. Ideally, installers want to apply the caulking in warmer temperatures. If it gets too cold caulking will not adhere.
