Skipping step six is the single most common reason a bay window feels cold. That cavity is open to the outdoors on three sides, and once the trim is closed up, reaching it again means taking the finish work back apart. How Do You Measure a Bay Window?

You measure a bay window by the width and height of the wall opening it will fill, excluding the head board and the seat board from the height figure. Andersen Corporation flags this directly, noting that bay window sizing is unusual because the head and seat board are not counted in the overall unit height.

That exclusion trips up homeowners who measure their existing assembly top to bottom. The number written on a manufacturer’s spec sheet describes the glass and frame stack only, so a unit listed at 60 inches high will occupy more than 60 inches of wall once the head and seat are added.

Depth is a separate measurement and it lives outside. Before ordering, we measure from the exterior wall face to the nearest fixed obstruction, which might be a walkway, a property line, a downspout, or a fence, and that clearance is what confirms whether a 30 degree or a 45 degree flank will fit.

Three width readings are standard practice. We measure the opening at the top, the middle, and the bottom, then build to the smallest of the three, because framing in an older house is rarely square and the tightest dimension is the one the unit has to clear.

Are Bay Windows Energy Efficient?

Bay windows are energy efficient when the glass package, the flanking window type, and the head and seat insulation are all specified correctly. The assembly carries more glass than the wall it replaced, so each of those three choices does more work here than it would on a flat window.

Glass area is the reason the specification matters. The U.S. Department of Energy reports that heat gain and heat loss through windows account for 25 to 30 percent of residential heating and cooling energy use, and the same agency notes that 76 percent of the sunlight striking a standard double-pane window converts to heat during summer. A bay window multiplies that surface, which cuts both ways depending on what the glass is coated with.

Coatings solve most of it. Low-E glass carries a microscopically thin metallic layer that reflects heat back toward its source, keeping warmth inside during winter and pushing solar heat away during summer, and it comes standard on the product lines we carry.
